Chapter Seventeen

Zane

Zane turned in the bed, half hoping Raven would have crawled in beside him during the night. She hadn’t. He ran a hand across his face, trying to shake the sleep from his eyes. It hadn’t exactly been a restful night. He’d been awakened by every single sound, wary of the Order of Salem, and the fear that they would take his mate away before he ever really got a chance with her.

The sounds that kept him up were never an attack, though. Raven moving around on the loveseat made squeaking noises. There was no doubt in his mind she had been uncomfortable sleeping there. He’d have to double his efforts and get her to share the bed with him tonight. If he ended up holding her against him in his sleep, well, then so be it.

Zane couldn’t quite believe that they’d shared such a passionate kiss, and Raven had still refused to share a bed with him. While their lips were locked, he had thought he’d made progress, melting his mate’s defenses.

He didn’t know much about her, but that didn’t matter. She was his. And she had been deeply hurt by her asshole ex. Raven had closed her heart off because of the shit this asshole had put her through. If Zane ever met that guy, he’d be in serious trouble.

Now, he had his work cut out for him. He would have to pull out all of the stops to get Raven to see how good they could be together. If he had been more of a romantic, if he had more experience with steady relationships, Zane wouldn’t have been so nervous about trying to seduce Raven.

All he knew to do was physical stuff, like be in her space, touch her softly, kiss her. He knew that wasn’t enough. Not for his mate, and not for himself. He wanted to know everything about Raven. Even the parts that hurt her to share.

He wanted to erase all her pain, all her bad times, and replace them with nothing but the best of memories. She deserved that and so much more.

In the living room, Raven was stirring again. Not just because she was restless on the sofa, but because she was fully awake as the sun’s light was streaming into the cabin.

Her bare feet slapped against the cold floor, and he watched as she made her way into the bathroom. The shower kicked on, and he sighed.

If they were together, he would be joining her. He’d be buried deep inside her while her legs were wrapped around his middle. He’d suckle her nipples until she cried out his name in pure ecstasy.

Great.

Now his morning wood was that much harder. With a growl, he rolled out of bed and rearranged his cock. It was painful, begging for release. If only he could take care of it with Raven.

The bathroom door swung open as he was prepping the coffee machine.

“Good morning,” he said, his voice still raspy from his fitful sleep.

“Hi,” Raven responded.
